Balthazar was the first soul to enter the realm that is now the Netherworld. He may be the deity who sculpted the original demon species, but he does not view himself in such high regards. As a demigod, he has the power to travel from the Netherworld into other dimensions, and can bring other people to and from the Netherworld with him. He most often uses this ability to take naughty children to the Netherworld, temporarily turn them into demons, and send them on a quest as a way to teach them a lesson. He is most happy when he is in his study, reading a new book or going over important paperwork.

Back on Earth, Zachary had a miserable life. Living with his abusive mother in an old house on a coastal cliff, Zach suffered from several hereditary mental illnesses, in a constant state of fear and sorrow. That all changed when Balthazar, mistaking Zach for another run-of-the-mill bad kid, took him to the Netherworld and turned him into a stripey-horned demon. Upon entering the Netherworld, Zach found that his illnesses had cleared up significantly. Overjoyed, he huged Balthazar and explained everything through tears. Balthazar took pity on Zach, and adopted him as his own son. Now, at 15 years old, Zach still lives with Balthazar in the Netherworld, helping him out by running errands and such. He has the ability to change between a humanoid form and his demon form, which is useful considering his humanoid form is instantly recogniseable to anyone in the Netherworld, whereas in his demon form he can easily go unnoticed. He may not be the brightest, but he is fiercly loyal and always in good spirits!
